Professionals with experience in immunohistochemistry preparation to include varying detection systems, specimen handling techniques, antigen retrieval methods, staining mechanisms, antibody optimization, assay validation, and related laboratory operations.

Each credential has specific eligibility requirements. It’s your responsibility to confirm that your education, training, and/or experience meet the criteria. Submit the correct documentation with your application. Once submitted, the category and route of application cannot be changed.

Qualification in Immunohistochemistry – QIHC

An applicant must be able to verify that they meet all eligibility requirements, including education, training, and/or experience. For complete information, see the Documentation section of the website. 

Education does not need to be from the United States. Details are available by reviewing the webpage titled Acceptable Education, also available in the routes below. 

To be eligible for this examination category, an applicant must satisfy the minimum requirements (for degrees, the stated degree or higher) of at least one of the following routes:

    • Valid HT(ASCP or ASCPi) or HTL(ASCP or ASCPi) certification,  

    • AND 6 months of full-time acceptable clinical* experience in immunohistochemistry within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Experience Documentation Form OR 6 months of full-time acceptable veterinary, industry, or research experience in immunohistochemistry in the U.S. or Canada within the last 5 years that must be documented on this Experience Documentation Form.


    *Acceptable Clinical Laboratory:
    CMS CLIA certificate of registration, compliance, accreditation;
    OR DoD CLIP certificate of registration, compliance, accreditation;
    OR JCI accreditation;
    OR Accreditation under ISO 15189.

    Experience

    To fulfill the experience requirements for the Qualification in Immunohistochemistry, the applicant must have experience in the following areas:

    • Routine Histotechnology
    • The applicant should have experience in ALL of the following:

      • Fixation
      • Embedding / Microtomy
      • Processing
      • Staining
      • Laboratory Operations
    • Immunohistochemical and/or Immunofluorescence
    • ALL of the following should have been performed by the applicant:

      • Selection of proper control material
      • Performance of staining technique
      • Titration of immunologic reagents
    • Quality Control and Assurance
    • The applicant should have participated in Quality Assurance related to ALL of the following:

      • Method selection, validation, documentation, and optimization
      • Reagent selection, preparation, storage, disposal
      • Safety
      • Specimen fixation, processing, microtomy
      • Interpretation of normal staining patterns

    Direct performance, training and/or management/supervision of Immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures are acceptable in meeting the experience requirements.

  • *Acceptable Clinical Laboratory:

    OR JCI accreditation;
    OR Accreditation under ISO 15189.

    #The foreign degree must be equivalent to a U.S. degree which will be determined by an acceptable transcript evaluation.

Beginning January 1, 2026, application fees for all ASCP qualification examinations will increase by $10.
