Cytology and Histology Programs

The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) remains a partner to all programs and program directors. Program directors of Cytology and Histology programs will only need to purchase one Program Performance Report (PPR) subscription to access both program types.

Cytology Programs

The ASCP BOC remains a partner to Cytology Programs, cytologists, and the patients they serve. As the scope of practice and the professional landscape for cytologists evolve, we aim to provide you with valuable resources.

Here are some key updates for your awareness:

  • While CAAHEP-accredited Cytology Programs are transitioning from baccalaureate to master’s level programs, a graduate of either of these program types is eligible to apply for the CT(ASCP) examination under Route 1 for up to five years after program completion.
  • Graduates of master’s degree CAAHEP-accredited Cytology Programs may choose to apply for the CT(ASCP) exam under Route 1, and/or the SCT(ASCP) exam under Route 3.
  • Both the CT(ASCP) and SCT(ASCP) examinations will continue to be offered for the foreseeable future.
  • Read about the CMS and CDC Approval of the SCT(ASCP) credential.

Beginning in 2025, the Program Performance Report (PPR) will be inclusive of CT(ASCP) and SCT(ASCP) examination outcomes data for each of your graduates, including those who sit for the SCT(ASCP) under Route 3 in 2024.

Histology Programs

Students who graduate from a Histotechnician (HT) program can take the Histotechnologist (HTL) examination if they meet the academic requirements. Therefore, if you are a Program Director of either an HT or an HTL program, your PPR will include an option to view data for both programs.

The Program Performance Report (PPR) will be inclusive of HT(ASCP) and HTL(ASCP) examination outcomes data for each of your graduates.

Important note for Histotechnology Program Directors:

Students who complete a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician (HT) program and apply for the HT(ASCP) examination under Route 1 do NOT need to submit a transcript to the ASCP BOC. Route 1 requires only completion of your program, which you verify through the EEV. If you have any questions, please email us at PDInfo@ascp.org
