NAACLS, CAAHEP, or ABHES Accredited Program

All applicants for an American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) credential must be able to verify that they meet all eligibility requirements.

Completion of a NAACLS, CAAHEP, or ABHES-accredited program within five years of program completion allows you to apply under a program route, resulting in a streamlined application process.

Accredited Program Completion

Graduates of NAACLS, CAAHEP, and ABHES-accredited programs must verify two educational requirements have been met:

  • successful completion of the accredited program (verified by their program director)
  • verify that they have met academic requirements (an official transcript submission)

Verification of Accredited Program Completion

The education received from a NAACLS, CAAHEP, or ABHES accredited program is acceptable for five years from the date of completion of that program.

The program director will electronically verify your successful completion of all program requirements before you are provided information about how to schedule an examination.

Verification of Academic Requirements

It is your responsibility to submit an official transcript to the ASCP BOC verifying that you have met all degree and/or coursework requirements

  • Route 1 applicants for the Histotechnician - HT(ASCP) credential do not need to submit any transcripts to the ASCP BOC

Application process for accredited program graduates

All education requirements must be completed before sitting for the examination. You may schedule and sit for the examination one time before an official transcript has been received and processed by the ASCP BOC.

Specific Coursework Requirements

  • Courses completed as part of your accredited program will be counted towards any required chemistry and biology coursework

Applying

  • Apply no earlier than six weeks before successful completion of all program requirements
  • Choose Route 1 (Route 2 for MB(ASCP) only) from the online application
  • Click on "Accredited Program Lookup" for your educational institution
    • Choose your program from the drop-down menu
  • Enter your program end date (this may be different than your graduation date)

Re-Application

If you do not appear for your scheduled exam date, or fail the examination, your official transcript, verifying completion of high school graduation, college coursework, and/or degree conferral, must be received and processed by the ASCP BOC in order for you to schedule another examination date.

Becoming Certified

If you pass the examination, an official transcript must be submitted to the ASCP BOC verifying you have met the degree and/or coursework requirements before you earn your credential.

Important: You will not have access to your examination score, and are not credentialed, until an official transcript is received and processed. If your official transcript is not fully processed within one year of your examination date, your score will be invalidated. To become credentialed, you will need to reapply, submit a new application and fee, and pass the certification examination.

Completion of a Structured Categorical Program

Individuals who have a conferred baccalaureate degree with appropriate science coursework and complete a structured categorical program under the auspices of a NAACLS-accredited MLS program may apply for the ASCP BOC technologist credential under Route 3. An official transcript verifying that all academic requirements have been met must be submitted and processed before an application will be made "eligible."

Applications should not be submitted until after successful completion of the structured program. Program completion will be verified by submitting a completed documentation form and a letter of authenticity.

Completion of an Accredited Program for Experience

If you have successfully completed an accredited program within the past five years, you may submit documentation to utilize this program in place of one year of full-time acceptable clinical experience for the Medical Laboratory Technician - MLT(ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS(ASCP) credentials. Completion of this program will count as one semester of organic or biochemistry.

  • NAACLS-accredited MLS program
  • NAACLS-accredited MLT program
  • ABHES-accredited MLT program
  • Foreign medical laboratory science clinical training program
