Nomenclature Task Force  

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP BOC) Nomenclature Task Force was created to address complexities created by varying titles used within the medical laboratory profession, to ultimately elevate unification and accuracy for laboratory professionals  

The Nomenclature Task Force led the ASCP BOC’s charge to transition to recognized “scientist” nomenclature including Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP) /MLS(ASCPi). In addition. Cytologist, CT(ASCP) / CT(ASCPi) and Specialist in Cytology, CT(ASCP) / CT(ASCPi) are likewise accurate professional monikers that the Nomenclature Task Force is advancing. 

Responsibilities  

  • Create resources and materials to support accurate and unified nomenclature integration for the c-suite, Human Resources, hiring leaders, and all BOC-credentialed professionals. 

  • Monitor use of inaccurate nomenclature while providing insights to improve professional nomenclature accuracy in presentations, publications, professional signature lines, any other area for which a professional title is shared.  

Time Commitment 

  • Commitment time varies depending on projects and tasks.   

  • The Nomenclature Task Force typically meets 8-10 times per year.   

 Terms 

  • Volunteers do not have set terms. 

 Requirements 

  • The Nomenclature Task Force is comprised of volunteers from the ASCP BOC Board of Governors (BOG) and invited guests from partnering organizations.
