CMS Decision Regarding Nurses

Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has officially declared that nursing degrees are not equivalent to biology degrees. This policy inhibits holders of a Bachelor of Nursing degree (BN) from performing high complexity testing without further education. The first proposal of this rule considered the degrees to be equivalent, which prompted a lot of alternative recommendations from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).

With the December 28, 2023, ruling patient safety is enhanced by ensuring that medical professionals possess the necessary education and training to accurately perform complex laboratory tests.

The ASCP BOC wants to emphasize the importance of this ruling because our purpose is to uphold excellence in the credentialing of laboratory professionals on behalf of patients worldwide. This decision supports patient safety and offers reassurance that the medical professionals performing their tests are well-trained and highly qualified.
