Advocacy for the Profession

The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) credentials affirm that a professional has achieved defined standards of education, training, and/or experience and successfully met the examination’s passing standard, demonstrating a foundational level of knowledge and skills.

With experts from around the globe having attained 650,000+ certifications and qualifications, ASCP BOC credentials are globally regarded as the benchmark of excellence. Professionals can begin with an initial credential, advance into specialist designations, and continue to grow through stacking credentials as their careers progress, all supported by the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) to ensure lifelong learning and patient safety. Innovations such as auto-eligibility for graduates of accredited programs and the adoption of Credly digital badges further strengthen workforce readiness and recognition in today’s healthcare environment.

ASCP BOC credentials hold unique applicability to research efforts, career trajectories, and even c-suite leadership, with major health systems and the U.S. military embedding ASCP BOC credentials as a requirement for advancement. This widespread integration reflects the credibility and trust ASCP BOC has established through nearly a century of rigorous processes, ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) accreditation under ISO/IEC 17024 standards, and independent governance. Collectively, these qualities ensure that ASCP BOC remains the highest standard in laboratory professional credentialing, empowering professionals, advancing global recognition, and reinforcing the laboratory’s essential role in patient care.

Working with our partners, advocates, and other leaders the ASCP BOC engages in advocacy efforts that protect and strengthen the medical laboratory profession, elevating visibility for laboratory professionals and other ASCP BOC-credentialed experts. From championing the recognition of ASCP BOC credentials in state licensure requirements to safeguarding programs that expand the laboratory workforce career pathways, we help ensure that credentialed professionals are supported and that pathways into the laboratory workforce remain strong and accessible.
