Enter & Allocate CMP Points

You must properly enter and allocate all continuing education credits (CEs) to the areas necessary to meet the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) point requirements for your credential before submitting your CMP declaration.

CE Credits Earned Through Specific Providers:

These CE providers' credits may automatically upload* to your ASCP transcript, which can be used for completion of the ASCP BOC CMP requirements.

  • American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA)
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS)
  • American Proficiency Institute (API)

*Individuals must meet the provider's requirements to benefit from this service. If your CE credits from these providers do not automatically appear in your ASCP transcript, please work with the CE provider to ensure that you meet their requirements. Alternatively, you may follow the instructions below to "Manually Enter & Allocate CEs."

  • Courses completed through these providers will automatically appear in your ASCP transcript and be available for you to allocate to the areas necessary to meet the CMP points requirements for your credential.
  • The online CMP declaration process automatically tracks which points you have assigned to fulfill the areas necessary to meet the CMP point requirements for your credential and those available for you to allocate.
  • While CEs completed through these providers are automatically entered in your ASCP transcript, you must still allocate them to the areas necessary to meet the CMP point requirements for your credential before submitting your CMP declaration.

If your organization is interested in providing automatic upload of CEs to the ASCP transcript for use in completing ASCP BOC CMP requirements, email ASCPBOC@ascp.org.

Time Limits for Earning CMP Points

All CEs earned toward fulfilling the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) requirements must be completed within your current three-year credential cycle, or within the last three years if your credential has expired, or if you are participating in CMP voluntarily.

  • Example: If your credential expires January 2029, only CE credits completed between January 2026 and January 2029 may be used for CMP.

Stacked Credential Holders

If you hold multiple ASCP BOC credentials, a separate CMP declaration must be submitted for each credential for which you are completing the CMP. You may use the same activities for more than one credential, provided the activity meets the CMP requirements for the category and is completed within the required time frame.

For example, the same 1-point activity in Laboratory or Patient Safety may be used to meet that CMP requirement for more than one credential.

If you have earned multiple credentials in the same area (e.g., BB(ASCP) and SBB(ASCP)), as a professional, it is your prerogative which credential(s) to maintain. Maintaining a credential requires being active in the three-year CMP cycle with related requirements. Not maintaining a credential may entail reinstatement and/or re-examination should that credential be required for your future professional trajectory.

Areas Necessary to Meet the CMP Requirements

All credentials have at least 4 areas in which CEs must be completed and allocated:

  • Dedicated Points in the area of credential – specific to the credential being maintained
  • 1 point in laboratory or patient safety (including but not limited to):
    • Quality control
    • Quality assurance
  • 1 point in medical ethics (including but not limited to):
    • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
    • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)
    • Sexual harassment
    • Microaggressions
    • Compliance
    • Confidentiality
    • Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Related areas of interest (including but not limited to):
    • Laboratory specialty (specific to the credential being maintained)
    • Management
    • Education
    • Related laboratory areas of interest

See the CMP Overview page for links to each credential page for specific details about CMP point requirements.
