Expired Credentials

If you have a three-year time-limited American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) credential and you do not participate in the ASCP BOC Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) before your credential expires, you are no longer allowed to cite the ASCP credential after your name.

Reinstating Your Expired ASCP BOC Credential

To reinstate your expired credential, you must submit a completed CMP declaration form documenting all continuing education (CE) as required by your credential category. CEs must be earned within three years of the date you submit your CMP declaration. A reinstatement fee, in addition to the application fee, is required.

Example: If a CMP declaration is submitted on March 15, 2026, CEs must be earned on or after March 16, 2023.

Expired for 10 years or More

You may reinstate an expired ASCP BOC credential by completing the CMP and paying the application and reinstatement fees within ten years of expiration. If you have allowed your ASCP BOC credential to expire for more than ten years, you will be required to retake and pass the credential examination to reinstate your credential.

Effective 11/1/2019, lapsed NCA certificants at the time of the unification will be required to retake and pass the certification examination to reinstate their certification.

Email 10yrexpired@ascp.org to receive additional details and instructions. Provide your ASCP customer ID and the credential(s) you wish to reinstate.

CMP Reminder Notifications

It is your responsibility to monitor your three-year credential cycle and submit your completed CMP declaration prior to your credential expiration date.

  • Make sure to keep your email address up to date in your ASCP account under “Profile and Settings.”

  • Check your Junk and Spam folders for emails.

  • Whitelist ASCP and ASCP BOC email addresses.

  • Log in to your ASCP account at any time to view the status of your ASCP BOC credentials and any submitted CMP declaration(s).

As a courtesy, the ASCP BOC sends out numerous automated emails reminding you to participate in the CMP, prior to your credential expiring:

  • One-year anniversary  (newly credentialed only)

  • One-year reminder

  • Six-month reminder

  • Three-month reminder

  • One-month reminder

  • One-week reminder

  • Expired

In addition, after submitting your CMP declaration, automated emails are sent whenever there is a change in the status of your declaration.

It is your responsibility to participate in the ASCP BOC CMP to keep your credential valid. CMP reinstatement fees will not be refunded or waived due to the non-receipt of email notifications.
