Mastering Cancer Biomarker Testing Navigation (BTN)

Equipping laboratory professionals for the evolving landscape of precision medicine

A continuing medical laboratory education (CMLE) eligible certificate program. The Biomarker Testing Navigation (BTN) certificate program delivers a comprehensive, modular learning experience designed to strengthen the role of laboratory professionals in cancer biomarker testing and precision medicine. Developed by experts with deep experience across clinical, laboratory, and diagnostic settings, the certificate program offers practical insights into cancer biomarker workflows, interdisciplinary collaboration, and diagnostic stewardship.

Learners will complete six core modules and choose from a selection of electives, all crafted to provide actionable knowledge and relevant, real-world applications. Bonus materials—such as case studies, job aids, and downloadable tools—enhance learning and support immediate use in practice. Build the skills and confidence to navigate the evolving landscape of personalized cancer care through targeted, expert-informed education.

Participation in the ASCP Biomarker Testing Navigation certificate program will not result in the attainment of an ASCP BOC credential.

Why Cancer Biomarker Testing Navigation Matters

Inconsistent or delayed cancer biomarker testing contributes to suboptimal treatment outcomes. Cancer biomarker testing failure rates further exacerbate the issue. Literature reveals that 10% to 20% of cancer biomarker tests are unsuccessful and as many as 90% of these failures may be attributed to preanalytic factors (Pineault et al. 2025).

Studies show that almost half of patients with non–small cell lung cancer do not undergo cancer biomarker testing as recommended by National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Of the patients with non–small cell lung cancer who do receive cancer biomarker testing, less than one-third receive recommended targeted therapies (Pineault et al. 2025).

BTN addresses this challenge by embedding trained laboratory professionals into the workflow—ensuring timely, accurate, and complete cancer biomarker testing, whether testing is performed in-house or sent to reference labs.

Roles in Action

Goals for BTN:

  • Streamline test triage and management
  • Monitor quality indicators and spearhead improvements
  • Serve as a liaison between pathology and clinical teams
  • Support operational workflows that prioritize optimal patient testing outcomes
