Supported by the ASCP Foundation
The ASCP Foundation Global Health Trainee Fellowship provides pathology residents and fellows with an opportunity to expand their training through hands-on global health experiences in low- to middle- income country (LMIC) settings. Each year, the ASCP Foundation awards one $5,000 fellowship to support a trainee pursuing an in-country rotation and collaborative engagement with international pathology partners.
Since its inception, the Global Health Trainee Fellowship has supported 26 pathology trainees, whose rotations have taken place in Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. Additional placement opportunities are available through ASCP’s collaboration with the Bioventures in Global Health (BVGH) African Access Initiative, including sites in Cameroon, Senegal, and Lesotho. The ASCP Center for Global Health can also work with recipients to identify appropriate placements in other LMIC settings where pathology capacity-building partnerships exist.
This fellowship is designed to foster meaningful and sustained collaboration, not simply a short observational rotation. Fellows are encouraged to engage with host institutions before and after their in-country experience through virtual meetings, joint case discussions, and collaborative research. Because many partner sites participate in ongoing pathology education and research initiatives with ASCP, fellows are strongly encouraged to contribute to small research projects or existing studies, helping build lasting professional relationships and advancing global diagnostics.
