Dr. Alvin Ring Empowerment Scholarship for Laboratory Students

Supported by the ASCP Foundation

The Dr. Alvin Ring Empowerment Scholarship for Laboratory Students provides financial aid to those pursuing higher education in the medical laboratory sciences.

Originating in an endowed fund from Dr. Alvin Ring, this scholarship was established in 2024 through the ASCP Foundation. Click here to learn more about the development of this scholarship.

Each year, twenty scholarships will be awarded to ASCP HTL, MLT, and MLS laboratory students, with scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 depending on applicant qualifications and degree program pursued. Scholarship aid may be used toward certification fees, direct academic tuition, or needs-based expenses to support the student's academic career.

Application Open: Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 to Sunday, May 31st, 2026 (11:59PM CST)

Recipients Notified via Email: by Monday, August 3rd, 2026

Scholarships Distributed: by Monday, August 31st, 2026

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Have an active ASCP membership.
  • Be in good academic standing and/or show commitment to staying in the laboratory profession, as vouched for by academic or professional reference letters.
  • Provide testimonials, video clips, and/or photos for ASCP Foundation use, as requested.
  • Fit one of the following categories:
    1. Current high school students enrolled in a NAACLS-accredited program in Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Histotechnology (HTL) starting by September 1st, 2026.
    2. Current laboratory science students enrolled in a NAACLS-accredited program in Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Histotechnology (HTL).
    3. Currently an active student in a non-laboratory science field, but starting in a NAACLS-accredited program in Phlebotomy (PBT), Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Histotechnology (HTL) by September 1st, 2026.
    4. Currently a working professional (not an active student), but starting in a NAACLS-accredited program in Phlebotomy (PBT), Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Histotechnology (HTL) by September 1st, 2026.

Masters and Doctoral program applicants are not eligible for this opportunity.
United States citizenship is NOT required for eligibility.
