ASCP Call for Effective Test Utilization Best Practices

March 06, 2024

The ASCP Quality and Patient Safety Steering Committee is seeking Best Practice Recommendations for Effective Test Utilization (formerly Choosing Wisely) from pathologists and laboratory professionals. The development of these recommendations is guided by a committee of ASCP members who are experts in effective test utilization. To learn more about the submission process, please click here.

Our laboratory test utilization recommendations are meticulously chosen, prioritizing those that:

  • Focus on tests that are frequently performed — maximizing impact
  • Encourage the use of tests that provide proven value to patients
  • Discourage the use of tests that are duplicative, do not provide value or are potentially harmful to patients
  • Consider the cost of testing in relation to their value to patient care
  • Discourage the use of outdated or obsolete tests and offer suggestions for alternative testing

These recommendations aim to enhance care quality, reduce costs, and optimize use of laboratory resources and personnel. We welcome your suggestions across the entire spectrum of laboratory medicine, with a special interest in expanding recommendations related to anatomic pathology.

To submit your suggested evidence-based recommendation(s), please utilize this template and include supporting evidence such as peer-reviewed publications or guidelines. You can review past recommendations, under the Choosing Wisely banner, here.
