HHS Extends Public Health Emergency

August 05, 2020

Shortly after receiving a June 23 letter from ASCP and 99 other organizations calling on the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar to extend the public health emergency, the Secretary did so. Extending the health emergency gives federal and state officials more authority and flexibility to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. The emergency had been set to expire on July 15. The letter, drafted by the American Society for Microbiology and supported by ASCP, urged that “it is imperative that the federal government continue to deploy all resources and authorities necessary to protect the public and assist states and localities as they continue to respond to this urgent situation.”
