Center for Global Health Sponsors African Pathologists and Residents to Attend USCAP Meeting

Updates

  • The ASCP Center for Global Health sponsored travel for two pathologists from Rwanda and Tanzania to attend the 2019 USCAP Annual Meeting, March 16-21, in National Harbor, MD. It also sponsored five pathology residents, one from Rwanda and four from Tanzania, to participate in educational programming at the 2019 USCAP Annual Meeting.
  • Two residents presented a poster about the collaborative cancer work with ASCP. ASCP CEO E. Blair Holladay, PhD, MASCP, SCT(ASCP)CM, and Chief Medical Officer Dan A. Milner, Jr., MD, MSc(Epi), FASCP, met with the Tanzanian delegation to discuss their accomplishments and how ASCP can further assist them in their career development. In addition, Dr. Edda Assel Mtambo Vuhahula, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Pathology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, will be a speaker at the ASCP 2019 Annual Meeting, Sept. 11-13, in Phoenix. She will present a session, sponsored by the ASCP Center for Global Health, about female leadership in pathology.

Volunteers

  • Mount Sinai Hospital, in cooperation with Pathologists Overseas/ASCP, is currently recruiting volunteer pathologists with cytology expertise to visit Liberia and assist with early stage epidemiological and diagnostic programs of training and service.
  • The Partners for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in Africa project is looking for foreign language speakers in Spanish and Burmese initially, as well as members with experience in lab design and implementation to serve on the advisory committee for C/Can 2025: City Cancer Challenge.
  • Opportunities are also emerging for ASCP members to lead country teams and assist with critical functions such as case assignment and team communications. If this is of interest, please contact ASCP Chief Medical Officer Dan A. Milner, Jr., MD, MSc(Epi), FASCP, at dan.milner@ascp.org

Meetings

  • Members of the ASCP Center for Global Health team will attend the ASCP Leadership Forum, April 10-14, in Miami, Fla.
  • Dr. Milner will attend the Management Information Tools, Inc. (MITS) Exchange meeting in Seattle, WA, which will take place May 19–21, as well as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting which takes place May 31 through June 4 in Chicago.
