ASCP Briefs ASCLS Legislative Symposium Attendees on Key Policy Issues

March 29, 2019

On March 18, ASCP helped briefed attendees of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) Legislative Symposium on key policy issues affecting the laboratory community. ASCP member Barbara Caldwell, MLS(ASCP)CM, provided a presentation on workforce issues, including findings from ASCP’s recent wage and vacancy surveys. The presentation also covered ASCP’s recent concerns with laboratory workforce data from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Society’s work on a yet-to-be-released job satisfaction survey, and a discussion of disparities in rural healthcare specific to the laboratory workforce. In addition, ASCP’s Washington, D.C., office staff updated participants on regulatory policy issues affecting the laboratory workforce, such as CMS’s policy of allowing individuals with a baccalaureate degree in nursing to perform high complexity testing.
