The American Journal of Managed Care (7/22, Bonavitacola) reports research found that “sexual and gender minorities living in North Carolina had low rates of being prescribed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) despite a significant percentage having an increased risk of HIV due to reported behaviors.” The study found that “stigma around PrEP, mistreatment in health care, and a misperception of risk of HIV were indicated as barriers to taking PrEP consistently.” The findings were published in the Southern Medical Journal.
