Elevated One-Hour Plasma Glucose Has Higher Predictive Value For Prediabetes Risk, Study Finds

June 17, 2025

Endocrinology Advisor (6/16, Nye) reports a study found that “one-hour plasma glucose (1-h PG) concentration may predict future prediabetes better than fasting PG (FPG) and 2-h PG.” For the study, participants “who did not have T2D at baseline and who underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at baseline and follow-up were evaluated to determine the ability of 1-h PG concentration in predicting prediabetes.” Researchers observed that among all participants at 7.5 years, 74.8% maintained normal glucose tolerance (NGT) “at a 1-h PG cutoff of less than 155 mg/dL, 83.2% maintained NGT at a cutoff of less than 120 mg/dL, 37.1% maintained NGT at a cutoff of 120 to 154 mg/dL, and 48.6% maintained NGT at a cutoff of greater than 155 mg/dL. Among participants who had NGT at baseline and a 1-h PG greater than 155 mg/dL, 36.2% progressed to prediabetes and 15.2% progressed to T2D at follow-up.” The study was published in Diabetes Care.
