Mailed HPV Self-Collection Kits More Than Doubled Cervical Cancer Screening Participation Compared To Telephone Reminder, Study Finds

MedPage Today (6/6, Bankhead) reported a study found that “participation in a cervical cancer screening program in a safety-net health system more than doubled when patients received at-home test kits by mail rather than just a telephone reminder to get screened.” Researchers observed that “six months after initial contact, 17.4% of patients invited by telephone to attend a clinic-based screening had participated in the program as compared with 41.1% of those who had an at-home test for human papillomavirus (HPV) mailed to them. The participation rate increased to almost 50% among patients who received the home test kit and a follow-up phone call from a patient navigator.” The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
