Coinfection With HIV Associated With Increased Hospitalization Risk For Patients With Mpox, Review Finds
April 17, 2025
Infectious Disease Advisor (4/16, Nye) reports, “The risk for hospitalization in patients with mpox...is significantly higher among those with HIV coinfection, according to results of a systematic review and meta-analysis.” Researchers analyzed 14 studies published between 2023 and 2024. The pooled analysis found the “risk for hospitalization due to severe mpox was significantly higher among patients with vs without HIV infection.” After an outlier study was omitted, “the relationship between HIV infection and increased risk for severe mpox disease was more pronounced.” Researchers concluded, “This study highlights the need for targeted health communications and interventions to prevent and manage mpox outbreaks, especially in populations with a high prevalence of HIV.” The review was published in BMC Infectious Diseases.
