Rare Disease Advisor (3/7, Siegfried) reported, “The presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria in the lower respiratory tract doubles the risk of exacerbations in patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), according to” a study. The “post-hoc analysis of sputum samples from patients with AATD suggested that the increased exacerbation risk was likely due to higher levels of inflammation.” The findings were published in Respiratory Medicine.
