Study Suggests Lung Cells In People With CF Show Unique Responses To SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A Virus

Cystic Fibrosis News Today (10/8, Maia) reports, “Cells from the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis (CF) are less susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19-causing virus, than those of people with other lung diseases, but they respond similarly to the influenza A virus, a study found.” Study data indicate “restoring function to CFTR, the protein that’s faulty or missing in CF, didn’t increase infection by SARS-CoV-2, suggesting CFTR is not directly involved in how well the virus multiplies within cells.” The findings were published in the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology.
