ASCP has just released an action alert calling on its members to contact their elected officials in Congress and urge them to support the bipartisan Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act, which would allow individuals to use their 529 account funds to pay for post-secondary training programs. The legislation would also allow individuals to use their 529 funds to cover the costs of completing an accredited laboratory training program, seeking certification, paying for test preparation courses, and related materials.
The measure was recently reintroduced in the House of Representatives by Representative Rob Wittman (R-VA) and in the Senate by Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). In introducing the bill, Rep. Wittman said, “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)…programs are essential to the future development of our nation…We have a responsibility to prepare students for the demands of our 21st century workforce and economy, and we must do everything we can to expand access to resources to afford postsecondary education and career training.”
Last year, ASCP was active in a coalition of more than 800 trade associations, professional societies, and businesses urging Congress to enact the legislation. While it did not pass, this important workforce bill garnered the support of more than 140 congressional cosponsors, an important barometer of congressional support for the measure.
