Pathologists', Laboratory Professionals' Remote Review of Digital Images Maintained by CMS

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) has clarified that pathologists and other laboratory personnel may continue to review digital laboratory data remotely after the conclusion of the Public Health Emergency. On May 11, CMS released guidance stating that pathologists and other laboratory personnel may continue to review digital laboratory data, digital results and digital images (“digital materials”) remotely, without obtaining a separate CLIA certificate. That said, the CMS guidance requires that the work being performed at the remote testing site must fall within the specialties/subspecialties covered under the primary site’s CLIA certificate.
