Many emerging scholars have discovered that presenting their research at ASCP’s Annual Meetings can be a catalyst for getting their work discovered.

“It’s an invaluable experience,” said Samreen Fathima, MBBS, MD, a second year resident in anatomic and clinical pathology at Baylor University Medical Center.  Her research won the Best Resident Poster at the ASCP 2020 Annual Meeting. “I presented in a virtual format. This honor brought me a lot of recognition as well boosted my confidence in pursuing my interests,” she added.

Dr. Fathima’s research examined tests that were frequently ordered at Baylor, when previous reports were already pending. She was able to identify the causes and ultimately, she helped reduce the overall costs of patient care at Baylor Health System.

Another poster winner at the ASCP 2020 Annual Meeting, Jodelyn Marquez Asinas, MSc, CSci, FIBMS, also urges others to submit their research at this year’s Annual Meeting and reap the benefits.

“Presenting the research has definitely benefited me since I was able to share the knowledge to an international audience,” said Ms. Asinas, senior biomedical scientist in the pathology department of Sidra Medicine in Doha, Qatar. “I received a note from an ASCP member who thanked me for sharing effective ideas for the IT configurations and statistical applications which he may also apply on implementing the Unity software in his laboratory.”

She was delighted that her work was selected as an “International Favorite” poster, a new award category last year. In addition to receiving recognition from colleagues at other institution, she received accolades from colleagues within her department. She has been approached by colleagues in other divisions within her health system about applying the Unity project in other departments.

Ms. Asinas’ quality initiative project titled, Applying the best internal quality control (IQC) management in Sidra Medicine, involved the effective consolidation and management of IQC in Sidra Medicine’s Clinical Biochemistry Division. The Biorad Unity Real-time (URT) and Unity Connect (UC) software was configured and implemented to streamline IQC management and reviews, and to compare the daily performance of individual tests against inter-laboratory worldwide reports sourced from Unity QCnet website.

“The Unity project produced a high level and very detailed IQC review which effectively evaluates assay performance to assist on IQC troubleshooting and root cause analysis, which provides a more cost effective service delivery,” she said.

The deadline to submit an abstract proposal is June 30.For more information, click here.
