July 28, 2025
Infectious Disease Advisor (7/25, Nye) reported a study found that “in patients with HIV infection, those with perinatally acquired HIV disease do not appear to experience higher rates of AIDS-defining conditions during the transition to adult HIV care.” Researchers observed that “in the weighted analysis of patients grouped by HIV transmission route, the mean 3-year incidence (per 100 persons) of AIDS-defining conditions was lowest among those with perinatally acquired disease from 2000 to 2011 and from 2012 to 2022. In contrast, patients who acquired HIV via heterosexual contact exhibited the highest mean 3-year incidence across both the earlier and later time periods.” The study was published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
