Serum Bile Acid Alterations Linked To Development Of Advanced Neoplasia In Barrett Esophagus, Study Suggests

September 11, 2024

Gastroenterology Advisor (9/10) reports, “Alterations in serum bile acids are independently associated with the development of advanced neoplasia in Barrett esophagus (BE) and potential neoplastic progression, according to study results.” Researchers found that “gene expression among patients in the highest vs lowest quartile of cholic acid levels showed 23 differentially expressed genes.” Study results indicate that “expression of genes mediating lymphocyte recruitment, differentiation, and activation was reduced, while genes that promote DNA replication and mediate immune infiltration in tumors were upregulated.” The findings were published in Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology.
