Tobias Cohen, MD, PhD

Assistant Director of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Biotherapies, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine

2023 Honoree

I was named to the 40 Under Forty list in 2023, during my Transfusion Medicine fellowship and have now finished my first year as an attending physician. While it’s still a bit early to tell, I think [this award] has helped establish early on in my career that I am a strong clinical pathologist/laboratory director.

Tell us about any significant/notable achievements or breakthroughs in your work since you were named a 40 Under Forty

The project to support our Labor and Delivery service I referenced in my application/video has gone live and is now at 24/7 operations. Our blood utilization has improved as has the use of the technology. That project was honored with a second-place award at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Quality Improvement Symposium and was selected for a poster at Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine’s 2025 Pregnancy meeting. The clinical trial I helped start has had its protocol published and its preliminary data presented as an oral presentation at AABB 2024.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in the years since being named a 40 Under Forty?

That despite being told as a medical student, resident, and fellow that once you become an attending you get to do things however you want, when you’re an attending you’re still beholden to the culture, protocols, and practices of the group you are part of

Of what are you most professionally proud in the years since your recognition?

That I’ve finally finished my long training path and felt prepared to succeed in my first year as an attending physician/medical laboratory director.
