2018 Honoree

During the early years of my career, I served as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, working the evening shift at a mid-sized community medical center. In 2017, I was promoted to a supervisory role overseeing the transfusion service line and point-of-care testing for the hospital. Entering formal leadership, I set ambitious goals for my first year, focusing on driving significant change. Achieving these goals required forging strong relationships and fostering trust to effectively manage the transformation I envisioned.

In 2018, my efforts were recognized when I was named one of ASCP’s Top 40 Under Forty. This honor acknowledged both the tangible accomplishments of my inaugural year as a leader and my forward-looking vision for the future of laboratory medicine. The recognition was a pivotal moment in my career, sparking a profound shift in perspective. Through the connections I cultivated at ASCP, I gained exposure to a broader network of professionals whose insights and experiences expanded my understanding of leadership. This experience underscored the importance of transitioning my mindset from "I" to "We"—a vital step toward becoming the kind of leader I deeply admired.

This recognition propelled my career in two transformative ways. First, it prompted deep self-reflection and a commitment to cultivating the interpersonal and strategic skills necessary to lead effectively in high-pressure environments. Second, it served as a defining credential that enhanced my professional profile. When I sought new opportunities, the distinction resonated with prospective employers and validated my capabilities. As a result, I transitioned from an entry-level supervisory role at a community medical center to becoming the Director of Clinical Operations at a prestigious medical school. This journey was profoundly shaped by the network I built through ASCP and the renewed confidence that this recognition instilled in me.

Since being named one of ASCP’s Top Forty Under 40 in 2018, I have been honored with several additional leadership awards that reflect my ongoing dedication to the community and the field of laboratory medicine.

In 2019, I received the ASCP Ambassador Achievement Award, recognizing my exceptional contributions to volunteerism and advocacy for the profession. That same year, Illinois State University, my alma mater, named me an Influential Alumni in Health Sciences, highlighting the impact of my work on the broader healthcare community.

In both 2022 and 2024, I was featured on The Pathologist Power List, a distinction that celebrates influential leaders shaping the future of pathology and laboratory medicine. Most recently, in 2024, I was honored with the Excellence in Laboratory Management Award by Lab Manager Magazine, acknowledging my commitment to operational excellence and visionary leadership.

These accolades represent more than professional achievements—they are a testament to the deep commitment I have made to advancing my profession, serving my community, and inspiring positive change in healthcare.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in the years since being named a 40 Under Forty?

The most profound lesson I have learned since being named one of ASCP’s Top 40 Under Forty is that no achievement is truly accomplished in isolation. While I have dedicated significant effort to identifying opportunities, honing new skills, and advancing both my career and the field of medical laboratory science, these endeavors would not have been possible without the support of a robust professional network.

Building and sustaining this network has been foundational to my growth. Colleagues and mentors have offered invaluable guidance, encouragement, and perspective through the inevitable challenges and triumphs of leadership. Their insights have not only enriched my understanding but have also served as a steady source of inspiration and accountability. Leadership, at its core, is a collective journey, and the relationships we cultivate along the way provide the strength, wisdom, and collaboration needed to navigate its complexities. This realization continues to shape my approach to both personal and professional development, underscoring the transformative power of connection and community.
