Daniel Mettman

MD, FASCP

Daniel Mettman, MD, is a pathologist at the Kansas City VA Medical Center and is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and cytopathology. He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Wichita State University. He attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Mettman is a fellow of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the College of American Pathologists. He serves on a number of local and national committees within the Veterans Health Administration as well as several ASCP collaboratives.

Dr. Mettman has an interest in increasing pathologist consultation to maximally leverage pathologist expertise for optimizing healthcare quality and efficiency. He created a consultation service at his facility that has improved standardization and efficiency of requesting and reporting for anatomic pathology molecular tests. This service has allowed for billing of work that was formerly uncaptured and furthered tissue stewardship by decreasing inappropriate testing. Through his work chairing a national workgroup he has assisted with implementation of similar consults at over 10 sites scattered throughout the country. He is also currently assisting with implementation at eight additional sites as part of a national health systems research study. Additionally, he is interested in improving pathologist satisfaction and performance by streamlining protocols and responsibilities such that pathologist time is prioritized to work that requires pathologist skill, that is most reproducible, and that most significantly impacts patient care.
