Jonathan Chen, MHS, PA(ASCP), is an ASCP-certified pathologists’ assistant (PA) who works in surgical pathology at Duke University Health System in Durham, North Carolina. He received his bachelor’s degree in biological science with a concentration in neurophysiology from the University of Maryland and then completed his Master of Health Science degree at the Duke pathologists’ assistant program. He currently works as a staff PA at Duke where he is responsible for grossing specimens, covering frozen sections, and collecting tissue for biobanking. He also teaches pathology residents and PA students at the gross bench.
His special interests include head and neck pathology, orthopedic (bone/soft tissue) pathology, and gross specimen photography. He is also involved with the Duke PA program where he coordinates the grossing lecture series and is the co-course director for the biomedical photography course. He enjoys mentoring PA students as they prepare a pathology case study manuscript and poster presentation for the annual American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) Fall Conference.
Mr. Chen is a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and a fellow member of the AAPA where he volunteers on a few committees. He is currently the vice chair of the Student Delegate program subcommittee and helps plan the PA student sessions at the AAPA Fall Conference. He volunteers on the Grossing Guidelines committee where he is the section author and oversees the bone/soft tissue section grossing protocols and also is a subsection author in the pediatric section. Lastly, he also enjoys peer reviewing manuscripts as a reviewer on the Peer Review committee.
