Sophia B. Bellegarde, MD, MBA, MLS(ASCP) is an anatomic and clinical pathology resident at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. An ASCP board-certified medical laboratory scientist and educator, she brings more than a decade of experience in transfusion medicine and laboratory science to her clinical training. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from the American University of Antigua, graduating summa cum laude with the Highest Academic Achievement Award, and holds an MBA in Healthcare Administration and Health Information Systems from St. Joseph’s University in New York. Dr. Bellegarde plans to pursue a fellowship in transfusion medicine.
Before medical school, she worked as a transfusion medicine quality assurance supervisor at NYC Health & Hospitals/South Brooklyn and a clinical laboratory scientist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where her initiatives remain in use today. Her work focused on improving transfusion safety and access for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Bellegarde’s research interests span platelet inventory optimization and maternal-fetal pathology. Some of her work has been presented at leading national meetings, including USCAP, and she will also present at the 2025 AABB Conference.
Fluent in Haitian Creole and French, Dr. Bellegarde is a passionate advocate for global health and health equity. She serves on multiple committees, including the CAP Foundation’s See, Test & Treat initiative. As a Pathology Ambassador for ASCP, she promotes visibility and inclusion in the field.
A former refugee and first-generation physician, Dr. Bellegarde draws on lived experience to inform her practice and mentors students at all levels with compassion and purpose.
