Chris Attaway

MD, MSc

Chris Attaway, MD, MSc, is an assistant professor and parasitology subsection director in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. He is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as cytopathology and medical microbiology, and specializes in diagnostic clinical microbiology, with a focus on parasitology and infectious disease pathology. He holds degrees from Clemson University (BS), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MSc), and the Medical University of South Carolina (MD). He completed anatomic and clinical pathology residency including cytopathology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, followed by his medical microbiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. 

As a fellow of ASCP, Dr. Attaway co-chairs the Microbiology Special Interest Group for the Curriculum, Educational Resource, and Scientific Advisory Committee (CER-SAC). His ethos is centered on curiosity, excitement, positivity, and educational innovation—values shaped by his mentors and colleagues—with dynamic engagement and interactive approaches to shaping learning environments. Among his career milestones are the reintegration of parasitology testing in-house using algorithmic ordering, the development and publication of learner-centered teaching models, and the overall immense pleasure in teaching residents, medical students, and laboratory staff daily. Outside of academia, he enjoys running, video games, and history—particularly historic homes, 19th-century United States, and the ancient Near East.
