Yembur Ahmad

MD

Yembur Ahmad, MD, is a Boston-based academic pathologist with board certifications in anatomic/clinical pathology and blood banking/transfusion medicine. She is medical director of the Blood Donor Center and associate medical director of the Blood Bank at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School. She earned both her bachelor's degree and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s combined BA/MD program. Dr. Ahmad pursued her pathology residency at Johns Hopkins University, where she graduated with two specialized expertise track certificates in Global Health and Education. She then completed fellowship training in transfusion medicine at Harvard Medical School.  

Dr. Ahmad is a fellow of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), where she currently serves as immediate past chair of the ASCP Resident Council. She is also an active member of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB). Dr. Ahmad has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including two global health publications focused on improving laboratory quality and blood safety in Africa. 

Her vision is for everyone around the world to have equal access to safe, high-quality laboratory and transfusion services. Her research interests also include pediatric and neonatal transfusion practices, and she has presented her research at national and international meetings. Dr. Ahmad is passionate about promoting the visibility of pathology and laboratory medicine and proudly serves as an ASCP Pathology Ambassador.  

Outside of medicine, she enjoys international travel (40+ countries visited so far!), trying new vegetarian foods, and reading.
