Ibrahim Abukhiran, MBBS, is a board-certified gastrointestinal pathologist, clinical informaticist, and assistant professor of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as medical director of the Pathology Image Analysis Laboratory, associate director of AI Operations at the Computational Pathology and Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence (CPACE), and medical director of Synoptic Pathology Reporting across UPMC hospitals.
Dr. Abukhiran earned his medical degree from the Jordan University of Science and Technology, followed by AP/CP residency and a gastrointestinal pathology fellowship at the University of Iowa. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Clinical Informatics.
A national leader in digital pathology and computational diagnostics, Dr. Abukhiran directs a CLIA-certified image analysis lab that provides enterprise-level AI-powered clinical testing. His work focuses on the development and implementation of digital biomarkers—quantitative image-based tools for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy response prediction in solid malignancies. These assays are used in routine patient care and integrated directly into pathology workflows through formal diagnostic reporting.
He also founded UPMC’s first Computational Pathology Fellowship to train future leaders in this rapidly evolving field. Guided by a mission to make pathology smarter, more visible, and more integrated in clinical care, Dr. Abukhiran continues to drive innovation that transforms how cancer is diagnosed and managed across health systems.
