ASCP’s Laboratory Program Development Grants to help laboratory science programs educate and empower future medical laboratory professionals.

Grant Overview

Grants of up to $2,500 are available to support:

  • Ongoing or new research projects
  • New supplies and other equipment
  • Advertising and outreach efforts to promote the profession

To apply, programs must:

  • Be NAACLS or CAAHEP accredited. Programs that have gained "serious applicant status" by NAACLS are also eligible to apply.
  • Have at least one leader of the program as an ASCP member.

MLS Online Review Course

ASCP offers a competency-based curriculum to help U.S. and international medical laboratory scientists (MLSs) who plan on becoming ASCP/ASCPi MLS certified prepare for this examination. In addition to functioning as a concise review, covering the highlights of the content areas on the MLS exam, the MLS Online Review Course can also help you determine when you are ready to take the exam.

This course consists of 10 interactive online modules highlighting key areas on the MLS exam, incorporating case studies, real-life scenarios, and feedback. Nine of the ten modules will highlight the key content areas on the MLS exam. Resident In-Service Examination (RISE)

ASCP’s Resident In-Service Examination (RISE) helps Residents to assess and track their training progress and medical knowledge. In addition, it assists Program Directors in evaluating the training program curriculum. RISE is an evaluation tool that can be used to assess progress in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Molecular Pathology and Laboratory Administration.

Overview

  • RISE is a comprehensive examination tool that is utilized by various international and all U.S. Pathology Residency Programs.
  • More than 350 multiple choice questions with images were constructed by members of the RISE committee in collaboration with:

Scores & Reports

The examination is designed to be used as one tool to help address medical knowledge strengths and areas for improvement in resident performance. (Please note that RISE results should not be used as the sole criterion on which performance, promotion, or advancement is based.)

  • RISE results are confidentially distributed by ASCP to each Resident and Program Director.
    • The use of RISE results and their distribution to other advising faculty are at the discretion of the program director and departmental leadership. 
  • Computer-generated statistical and score reports are provided to assess both individual and peer group performance in relation to year of training and each content area.

RISE-FIRST In-Service Examination

The RISE-FIRST In-Service Examination was developed in response to needs expressed by Program Directors. The examination is intended for pathology residents just starting their pathology residency program. Program Directors may find RISE-FIRST a helpful tool in establishing a pathology-specific baseline for milestone assessment.

Product Overview

  • The online examination consists of approximately 150 multiple-choice items, many with images, constructed by pathologists who are acknowledged experts in their respective fields.
  • This examination covers all areas of anatomic and clinical pathology, including new techniques and laboratory administration.
  • The questions are not targeted to be as advanced as they are in the Resident In-Service Examination (RISE).
  • The exam is designed as an evaluation tool that may be used to assess a resident’s Medical Knowledge, one of the competency areas in the ACGME Outcomes Project.

Technical Requirements

The examination utilizes the ASCP Online Browser, which requires a download of free software from ASCP on all computers used to take the exam.  The ASCP Online Browser must be ready to use prior to taking the examination.

Registration Deadline & Exam Administration

  • The examination may be administered between June 19, 2023 - July 14, 2023.
  • The registration deadline is May 19, 2023.

Scores

Individual score information will be provided to Program Directors and to Residents.

Performance Reports

Computer-generated individual score reports and percentile rankings will be provided to the Residents and Program Directors.

Fellowship Exams

Increasing your knowledge in pathology is of critical value as move forward in your career. ASCP offers an array of Fellowship Exams to help pathologists broaden their knowledge. 

Fellow Transfusion Medicine In-Service Examination (TMISE)

The Fellow Transfusion Medicine In-Service Examination consists of approximately 120 multiple-choice questions from acknowledged experts in the field and is designed to test Transfusion Medicine Fellows on their medical knowledge; the examination is a cooperative effort between the ASCP RISE Committee and the AABB.

Fellow In-Service Hematopathology Examination (FISHE)

The Fellow In-Service Hematopathology Examination represents cooperation between the ASCP and the Society for Hematopathology (SH) and consists of at least 100 multiple-choice items, many with images.

Fellow Forensic In-Service Examination (FISE)

The Fellow Forensic In-Service Examination represents cooperation between the ASCP and the National Association of Medical Examiners and consists of at least 100 multiple-choice items, many with images.

Fellow Pediatric In-Service Examination (PISE)

The Fellow Pediatric In-Service Examination represents cooperation between the ASCP and the Society for Pediatric Pathology and consists of at least 90 multiple-choice items, many with images.

Fellow Neuropathology In-Service Examination (NPISE)

The Fellow Neuropathology In-Service Examination represents cooperation between the ASCP and The American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP) and consists of at least 100 multiple-choice items, many with images.

ASCP Resident Subspecialty Grants

ASCP Resident Subspecialty Grants give pathology residents the opportunity to go beyond the material at their current institutions by expanding their experience, knowledge, and exposure to expert pathologists in their subspecialty area.

Grant Awards

Grants are available as follows.

  • One week rotations $500
  • Two week rotations $1,000
  • Four week rotations $2,000

Applicants must be Resident members of ASCP and may be in programs years 1, 2, 3 or 4.
