Subspecialty Grants

In order to provide timely access to ASCP’s subspecialty grants, The American Society for Clinical Pathology is now offering two rounds of resident grants.

Grant monies are split between Round 1 and Round 2. The grants are given to defray the cost of doing elective rotations at outside institutions in fields of pathology in which the resident desires increased exposure. The time period of study will vary between two and four weeks and the ASCP grant will provide a $1000 or $2000 stipend depending on the length of study. This program is designed to allow residents to broaden their training experience by exposing them to material not currently available at their institution and by allowing them to work with a prominent pathologist of their selection.

You are eligible for the grant if you are an ASCP Resident member in your 1st to 3rd year of training at date of application. Round 1 grants are to be completed during the 2nd to 4th year of training (during the 2009-2010 academic year) and Round 2 grants are to be completed during the 2010-2011 academic year.

2010-2011 ASCP Resident Council
Subspecialty Grant Guidelines

I. Eligibility
To be eligible for this grant, you must be an ASCP Resident member in the 1st to 3rd year of training at date of application. Round 2 grants are to be completed during the 2010-2011 academic year.

II. Application Guidelines
The following application materials should be submitted:

1. Completed application form
2. Letter of intent (500 words or less) from the applicant describing why this experience is necessary and how it will serve to enhance training in pathology
3. Letter of confirmation from the residency program director must reflect the applicant’s standing in the parent program and indicate those benefits provided to the resident during outside rotations, e.g., salary, benefits, and liability insurance
4. Letter of acceptance from the accepting institution where the externship would take place
5. Current Curriculum Vitae
6. ASCP membership #

III. Application Deadlines and Award Announcement
The deadline for applications for Round 2 grant applications is January 15, 2010.   

Resident Council Subspecialty Grant Award Announcements will be made at the USCAP meeting in Washington, DC, March 20-26, 2010. Participants shall also be notified by mail.

IV. Financial Grant
Grant Awardees will receive $1,000 reimbursement for 2 weeks or $2,000 for 4 weeks to cover costs of living/travel related to away rotation.

VI. Judging
The awardees shall be chosen from all eligible applicants by members of the ASCP Resident Council who have been designated to serve on the Resident Council Subspecialty Grant Committee.  Judging will be held for all applications postmarked by January 15, 2010.

Applicants will be selected based on need for and strong interest in specific pathology subspecialty training. Preference will be given to applicants who are participating in a subspecialty not available at their home institution.

The ASCP Resident Council Subspecialty Grant Committee shall not discriminate against any participant based on age, sex, gender, religion, or race.

Grant applicants may choose pathologists and training programs according to their specific training needs.

“Day on the Hill” Grant

Residents who have an interest in the political process can spend a day with lawmakers discussing pathology-related issues. The Hill Day Grant Program was created to provide an opportunity for residents to participate in the legislative process on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.  Read about what happened at last year's event here.  Residents who have an interest in the political process and pathology-related issues on a national scale are encouraged to apply for this grant. 

Guidelines

I. Eligibility
To be eligible for this grant, you must be an ASCP resident member in your first to fourth year of training at date of application. Grants are good only for the 2010 “Day on the Hill” event, which will be held in April 2010.

II. Application Guidelines
The following application materials should be submitted:

1. Completed application form
2. ASCP membership #
3. Current Curriculum Vitae
4. Letter of intent (500 words or less) stating interest in health policy and/or issues related to the future of pathology and laboratory medicine.
5. Program Director’s signature, which will indicate his/her approval to take this leave, should you be selected.

III. Application Deadlines and Award Announcement
Application Deadline: February 3, 2010. 

Resident Council “Day on the Hill” Grant Award Announcements will be made at the ASCP Resident Reception at the USCAP meeting in Washington, DC, March 21, 2010. Participants will be notified by email.

IV. Financial Grant
Grant Awardees will receive round-trip airfare or appropriate mileage compensation, hotel accommodations for two nights, and up to $250 for additional expenses incurred.

VI. Judging
