Highlights of ASCP 2020 Virtual

August 31, 2020

Be sure to join us for ASCP 2020 Virtual from Sept. 9-12. In this exclusively virtual experience, you’ll have the opportunity to easily attend, interact and experience the same unique, timely education while connecting with a global community. Check out some of the highlights below:

State of the State: the COVID-19 Pandemic (DMT176-20): The session, “State of the State: The COVID-19 Pandemic,” will address the current state of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and focus on lessons learned from the clinical and public health laboratory community during 2020. Diagnostic testing has played a critical role in the pandemic and has been central to patient care. We will explore the state of complex issues such as testing capacity; testing protocols and guidelines; turn-around time; the role of pooled, serology and antigen testing; scarce medical resources; our pathology and laboratory medicine workforce; and the status of efforts at the federal level to provide assistance to the states. Finally, this session will outline the rapidly evolving nature of the pandemic and discuss next steps for our profession. See State of the State: The COVID-19 Pandemic, Sept. 10 (11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. CST).

Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on Pathology: Where We've Been and How to Prepare for the Future (DMT171-20): Come hear about the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how clinical laboratories, pathologists and laboratory professionals can better prepare for the near future. Learn about some of ASCP’s legislative and regulatory advocacy work in response to the pandemic, the changes and challenges it has brought or posed for pathology and laboratory medicine. In addition, speakers will discuss the results of its laboratory staffing data during the COVID-19 pandemic this month. Part of the ASCP 2020 Vacancy Survey posed questions regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on laboratory staffing and retention of staff. Check out Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on Pathology: Where We've Been and How to Prepare for the Future, Sept. 11 (2:15-3:15 p.m. CST).

ASCP’s Choosing Wisely Champions (DMT141-20): After completing a rigorous evaluation, ASCP has named its 2020 Choosing Wisely Champions – individuals who have made and continue to make significant contributions toward advancing the ideals of Choosing Wisely. The three Champions will share their achievements by discussing the Choosing Wisely initiative activities they implemented; the engagement of laboratory, clinical, administrative, and other organizational departments (e.g., building the broader team); objective evidence of their success in implementing Choosing Wisely initiatives; and feedback or recommendations/ lessons learned from their work that will be beneficial to others. Please join us in celebrating their accomplishments as we recognize these three individuals during the Choosing Wisely Champions Session on Sept. 11 (1-2 p.m. CST).

Job Satisfaction, Well-being, Burnout and Diversity in the Laboratory (DMT 138-20): This session will include a discussion on results of the recent ASCP Job Satisfaction, Well-being, and Burnout Survey for Pathologists, Laboratory Professionals and Residents. It will cover the symptoms and causes of stress and burnout, and techniques to decrease stress and prevent burnout. Join us for Job Satisfaction, Well-being, Burnout and Diversity, Sept. 9 (2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. CST).
