Social Media Team

Passionate about laboratory medicine and pathology and love interacting with your peers online? Join the ASCP Social Media Team to support and expand the reach of existing discussion taking place around pathology and laboratory medicine on social media!

Social media provides a great platform for members of the lab team to connect and share knowledge, resources and experiences to showcase the strength and reach of the laboratory. Join the ASCP Social Media Ambassadors program today and let’s work together to grow the reach of engaging content that interests you!

How to Become Involved

ASCP members active on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram can volunteer to be part of the Social Media Team.

Responsibilities

  • Be social! Be a current ASCP member and have a Twitter or Instagram or Facebook account. Your pick—you just need to be active on one channel to participate.
  • Give your input! When needed, act as a subject matter consultant regarding potential topics and content for ASCP social media channels.
  • Tag we’re it! When sharing case studies or other cool resources related to pathology and laboratory medicine on social media, we encourage you to tag ASCP, as well as include a team-specific hashtag selected by the group if posting on Twitter or Instagram. By doing this you help us easily find your content to curate on our ASCP social media channels for everyone to see!
  • #MOTTIRL – Meet your fellow Social Media Team members in real life at our most anticipated event of the year—the ASCP Annual Meeting! We encourage you to organize an ASCP Social Media Team tweetup with fellow team members and may also ask for volunteers from this group to participate in other on-site social media activities, such as going live on ASCP channels. If you attend the meeting, we encourage you to tag ASCP, as well as include the team-specific hashtag selected by the group and the Annual Meeting hashtag, as you share your experience.
  • Connect! Share and engage with ASCP content on ASCP’s social media channels on a regular basis and be willing to respond to “hot topic” conversations. We’ll let you know about resources and opportunities we’d love your help highlighting at various times of the year. We’ll also reach out about any hot topics we’re sharing about that we expect to generate significant discussion. We’ll also have occasional conference calls (~2/year).
  • Get real! If requested and willing, participate in a one-day takeover for an ASCP social media account showcasing your “day in the life” as a member of the pathology and laboratory medicine team. We will reach out to you regarding takeovers or let us know if there’s something cool happening in your laboratory!
  • R.E.S.P.E.C.T! When posting about ASCP, you may be perceived as representatives of ASCP. Please use rational judgement and be thoughtful and respectful of others in posts. Not that you wouldn’t otherwise!

Perks

You dig us and we dig you right back! Here’s what you can expect from us as an active member of the ASCP Social Media Team.

  • Recognition! Active ASCP Social Media Team members will be highlighted on the ASCP website and we’ll also highlight your content on our ASCP social media channels for everyone to see!
  • Swag! We want to show you our gratitude for your participation! Our most active ASCP Social Media Team members will receive a token of appreciation branded just for the team!

ASCP Policy Efforts

ASCP is proactive at identifying and developing programs and special efforts that advocate for members through policy statements.

Each year ASCP identifies issues as it Patient-Centered Policy Priorities (PCPPs). These priorities represent a patient-centered agenda that will be advanced throughout the organization. ASCP is committed to developing public policies that not only improve the public's health through the practice of laboratory medicine, but also represents the interests of its membership.

Interested in Getting Active on Policy Issues

ASCP's Commission on Science, Technology and Public Policy (CSTP) promotes excellence in advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists and laboratory professionals.

In addition to ASCP oversight of public policy, ASCP gives members a voice to ensure that federal and state policymakers understand key issues of concern to pathologists and other laboratory professionals. ASCP members must continue to make our collective voice heard.

Choosing Wisely + ASCP

ASCP is proud to join the ABIM Foundation in the Choosing Wisely Campaign to reduce waste in the healthcare system. As one of 70 medical societies in the campaign, ASCP is the only society representing pathology and laboratory medicine. Our goal is to identify the right test at the right time for the right cost to better serve our patients.

As part of our ongoing effort to collaborate in the interest of patients, ASCP will focus on appropriate test utilization for the next several years.

Partners for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment in Africa

Cancer is a critical public health problem in Africa, and ASCP’s collaborative diagnostic and treatment initiative utilizes the latest technology to ensure that clinicians and laboratory professionals can communicate quickly to provide remote diagnostic cancer care.

The Challenge

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa with cancer at the forefront. Cancers diagnosed in Africa are associated with a higher mortality than other regions of the world due to limited availability of screening, laboratories and pathologists. This results in the majority of cancers not being diagnosed until they reach an advanced stage.

The Solution

By leveraging leapfrog technology and the skills and experience of ASCP members, clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa can have access to quality real-time diagnostics. This allows physicians and clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa to consult with pathologists in the U.S. to provide a level of diagnostic cancer care that is usually scarce or unavailable. Thanks to an ASCP-led coalition, this technology is already in use, and it provides seamless interaction, management and secure access to pathology and laboratory clinical multimedia, including digital whole slide images.
