Over the past three years, ASCP has provided over $2 million in grants and scholarships to our members and laboratory science programs to invest in future leaders of the profession. ASCP is currently accepting applications for a whole host of grants and scholarships now through May 13. These include:
David Twa, MD, PhD, a resident in anatomical pathology at the University of Calgary, Canada, used the Resident Subspecialty Scholarship that he received last year to support his out-of-province elective in BST at UBC.
“Until recently, there was more limited opportunity for residents to rotate through the BST service at my home institution,” he says, adding, “I wanted to supplement this experience in working with expert pathologists Drs. Torsten Nielsen, Tony Ng, and Lawrence Lee.”
Over the course of four weeks, he got to sign out more than 200 cases including consults, fresh/gross over 60 complex specimens, and represent the service at weekly tumor boards. This experience was critical in ensuring that he had the requisite confidence to prepare for his licensing exams, obtain a competitive U.S. fellowship and solicit employment opportunities. Upon returning to his home institution, he shared his experience with colleagues.
“External electives for pathology residents serve as a valuable means of supplementing home institution experiences, forming research collaborations, and gaining operational perspective,” says Dr. Twa.
ASCP is committed to investing in its members and future leaders of the profession. To learn more about these opportunities and to apply please visit the Scholarships and Grants page of the ASCP website! Click here.
