ASCP Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

June 28, 2022

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is deeply concerned that the Supreme Court is abruptly ending the constitutional protections that have ensured access to abortion for nearly 50 years. The Supreme Court's decision puts the patient’s health at risk and exacerbates healthcare inequities.

ASCP, like many medical organizations, is troubled that this ruling will abrogate patient privacy and infringe, if not destroy, the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. ASCP believes that patients have a fundamental right to make their own healthcare decisions. Moreover, it is inappropriate for government or third parties to interfere with access to evidence-based reproductive health management and counseling.

ASCP recognizes that this issue is largely shaped by individuals’ views on faith and conscience. We believe this decision rests with the patient who is considering this medical procedure, based on their healthcare circumstances, and their own faith and conscience.
