social media keep up with the National Cell Bowl which ends with the Super Cell Bowl on Nov. 19.
“The intent is to help aspiring laboratory professionals prepare for their ASCP board exams, provide valuable education, and introduce our future laboratory leaders to the benefits of ASCP membership,” said Aaron Odegard, MS, MLS (ASCP)CMSMCM, Chair of ASCP’s Council of Laboratory Professionals.
The Cell Bowl uses a free study tool provided by CellaVision for students in each “team” to take weekly quizzes and medical laboratory faculty submit their team’s best score. At the end of the week, Tiffany Gill, a.k.a. “Medical Lab Lady Gill,” and the ASCP Council of Laboratory Professionals announce the weekly winners of each “division.”
From the weekly responses, Medical Lab Lady Gill and an additional ASCP member gauge if any teams struggled with the answers to a given quiz. If so, they provide follow-up opportunities to strengthen their knowledge.
“The idea is to shoot a video to provide a tutorial or additional education for those teams that are struggling. Tiffany and I invite laboratory professionals as guest presenters to offer students additional reinforcement,” Mr. Odegard said.
Professor Gill, coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Technology program at the College of Southern Maryland and member of the ASCP Social Media Committee, initially developed the Cell Bowl idea for her medical laboratory technician students and wanted to share this fun education tool with educators across ASCP’s membership. Ms. Gill loves to engage medical laboratory students in learning and also educates through her YouTube channel, Medical Lab Lady Gill.
“Tiffany wanted to get students engaged with fellow students, as well as fellow programs and students from other schools. She knows getting students engaged in our profession is key and wants to showcase our educational programs at the same time,” Mr. Odegard explained.
During the first four weeks of the Cell Bowl, students from programs within a given region compete against each other. Then, they’ll move on to compete at an even larger regional level and finally go on to compete in the Super Cell Bowl championship.
Yes! A trophy will be presented to the winning team.
