The ASCP community mourns the passing of Emanuel Rubin, MD, FASCP, who distinguished himself as a pathologist, researcher, educator and author during his career.
Dr. Rubin’s professional odyssey was brilliant and illustrious. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he grew up in Atlantic City, NJ, and earned a bachelor of science from Villanova University in 1950. He went on to attend Harvard Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in 1954. He completed pathology training at Mt. Sinai, in New York, and then joined the faculty there.
Dr. Rubin became chair of the Department of Pathology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in 1972. He served subsequently as chair of the Departments of Pathology at Hahnemann Medical School (now Drexel University Medical School) and, from 1987 onward, at Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College) of Thomas Jefferson University. In 1987, he was also named adjunct professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Among his many contributions to pathology, Dr. Rubin wrote numerous books, including the renowned Rubin’s Pathology textbook, now in its eighth edition. It has been translated into multiple languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese.
