ASCP Proudly Celebrates Future Leaders of Pathology and the Medical Laboratory

March 01, 2019

A year ago, Dana Razzano, MD, embarked on an incredible journey when she applied to ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program. She was not only selected as a 40 Under Forty honoree, but also made the 40 Under Forty Top Five in late August.

The experience has opened up new opportunities that are helping to advance her career. For example, she was invited to write for ASCP’s Lablogatory blog and is working to feature laboratory medicine members who work in global health. “This project came directly as a result of being recognized by ASCP’s 40 under Forty program,” says Dr. Razzano, a third-year chief resident in anatomic and clinical pathology at New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY.

“I wholeheartedly recommend others apply for the 40 Under Forty recognition program. It will definitely help to further your career and empower you to keep making a difference in the field,” she adds.

Apply for ASCP’s 2019 40 Under Forty program by April 18 and you could join 160 alumni of this prestigious recognition program. Or, nominate a colleague by April 5! The ASCP 40 Under Forty program recognizes 40 pathologists, laboratory professionals and residents under the age of 40 for their achievements and leadership qualities that are making an impact on pathology and laboratory medicine.

Bojana Djordjevic, MD, FASCP, also a 2018 40 Under Forty Top Five, says of her overall experience as an honoree, “Being celebrated by my own institution has helped highlight the essential role that pathologists play in patient care. It was also an opportunity to inspire my colleagues and co-workers in the pathology department; we work as a great team and support each other’s success.”

Dr. Djordjevic met ASCP President Melissa P. Upton, MD, FASCP, at the 2018 Annual Meeting and proposed an idea that is now coming to fruition. A long time mentor of pathology trainees, Dr. Djordjevic suggested presenting a session entitled, “A Seminar for Women in Pathology and Laboratory Professions: Navigating the Waters of Career Development and Dependent Care.” Her session topic was approved. Working with colleagues Lynette Chakkaphak, MS, MT(ASCP), and Krisztina Hanley, MD, FASCP, Dr.  Djordjevic is now preparing the panel discussion for the ASCP 2019 Annual Meeting.

Tiffany Channer, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, strongly encourages high-achieving laboratory professionals to apply for the award. “I guarantee you will have a remarkable year!” says Channer, who was selected as one of ASCP’s first 40 Under Forty Top Five in 2014.

"It was amazing to meet other professionals who are like-minded, emerging leaders," she said. "The real reason I was so honored to be recognized is that it brings visibility to a profession I am passionate about.”

Now, it’s your turn!  If you are seeking to network for professional collaborations and connections, and build your skills in leadership, ASCP's 40 Under Forty program is for you.
