Lab Life Hack: Disconnect from Technology to Schedule Some Down Time

December 19, 2018

Every day, we are tethered to our smart televisions, cell phones, computers, and other electronic devices.  There’s no question that technological innovations have benefited our lives in extraordinary ways. Yet sometimes, it’s important to unplug your devises to relax and reconnect with the world around you. Hear from an ASCP pathologist and a laboratory professional about how they rejuvenate and regain perspective on what’s really important by periodically disconnecting from technology.

Laboratory Professional

“I tend to want to be really connected with people. But when I see things on the news or social media that make me feel angry or helpless, I unplug from all of that technology and remind myself what is actually important. Either I’ll read a book, hang out with friends, or walk by the lake if the weather is nice. I don’t have a prescribed time to decompress, but when I do, I ‘re-set’ to zero.”

Kelly Swails, MT(ASCP)

Pathologist

“I schedule a massage twice a month. During this time, I turn my phone off (unless I am on call). I am strict about no devices at least a half an hour before bed.”

Dana Altenburger, MD, FASCP
