Help Rebuild Labs and Lives

One year ago, Puerto Rico was hit by the most destructive natural disaster ever to strike the region. Yet Hurricane Maria brought out the best in ASCP’s members. You responded to our call for help, which enabled us to provide vital medical supplies and emergency relief grants to rebuild the island’s medical laboratories.

Since that time, the ASCP Foundation has delivered medical supplies and support, including

- biopsy needles

- syringes

- disposable gowns

- safety needles

- 65 emergency relief grants to ASCP laboratory professionals and pathologists

“ASCP is the one organization that has answered our call for help, and stood with us ever since,” said Lurmag Orta, MD, FASCP, a pathologist at the Hospital Auxilio Mutuo, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Orta reached out to ASCP and other medical organizations the morning after Hurricane Maria struck the island. She knew that her patients were in need of laboratory testing, so she put aside her own needs in order to care for her patients.

Dr. Orta will attend the ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting, Oct. 3-5, in Baltimore, to personally share with ASCP members her story of survival and how her laboratory team is working to rebuild their lives and labs.
