Gain New Insights and Interact with Renowned Faculty at KnowledgeLab 2023

January 18, 2023

KnowledgeLab 2023, to be held Feb. 28-March 1, in Scottsdale, AZ, is the destination where current and aspiring laboratory leaders can gain new insights from distinguished speakers and interact with colleagues who are all tackling the same challenges. Participants will learn from the knowledge and experiences of others as they sharpen their own laboratory management and leadership skills.

“KnowledgeLab is a place where established and emerging laboratory leaders come together to be inspired and learn day-to-day, practical information from experienced people in the field,” says Diana Kremitske, MS, MHA, MLS(ASCP), vice president of Diagnostic Medicine Institute at Geisinger and a presenter at KnowledgeLab. “Sessions are designed to be foundational or advanced to appeal to a wide audience. Besides the learning opportunities through the sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to network in a relaxed atmosphere and make valuable connections with others who share your experiences. Discussing relevant topics with peers is a great way to discover ideas that can be shared with your laboratories.”

Attendees will leave this two-day conference feeling energized and equipped with strategies and solutions that can have an immediate impact on their own laboratories and also offer an edge in their careers, while also making lasting connections.

KnowledgeLab sessions are highly interactive, offering attendees the chance to share their experiences and hear how others in similar positions are thinking. Session topics include:
• Business and Clinical Operations
• Medical Decision Support
• Quality Management for Patient Safety
• Human Resources
• Compliance and Risk Management
• Information Management and Technology
• Financial Management and Strategic Planning

Ms. Kremitske, who also serves on the ASCP Board of Directors, is part of an impressive roster of esteemed laboratory leaders who will serve as faculty for KnowledgeLab 2023. Others include:

• Ihab Abumuhor, laboratory director, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Torrance, CA
• Ali Brown, MD, FASCP, chief medical quality officer at ASCP
• Kamran Mirza, MD, PhD, FASCP, associate professor and vice chair, Education and Academic Affairs, Loyola University Health System, Maywood, IL
• Christina P. Nickel, MHA, MLS(ASCP)CM, CPHQ, clinical laboratory director at Bryan Medical Center, in Lincoln, NE
• Rodney Rohde, PhD, MS, SM(ASCP)CM, SVCM, MBCM, FACSc, associate director for the Translational Health Research Initiative at Texas State University, in San Marcos, TX, where he is also the College of Health Professions chair and Distinguished Regents' Professor of Clinical Laboratory Science.

“KnowledgeLab is the best resource I have found for leadership training that accommodates laboratory leaders in all phases of their career, from aspiring leaders seeking foundational training to those tenured leaders who are looking for more advanced training and updates,” says Ms. Nickel, who also chairs ASCP’s Council for Laboratory Management and Administration.

Featured sessions
KnowledgeLab 2023 will offer a broad scope of education sessions, ranging from employee management and leadership development to blood banking and the use of technology as a support tool for decision making. Dr. Mirza will present the general session, Bioethics and the Laboratory. Other sessions will include Peer-to-Supervisor Transitions; Proper Blood Management and Utilization; Humanity within the Lab: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Research & Laboratories; Dealing with Difficult People/Employee Coaching; and Using Electronic Medical Records to Provide Decision Support for Laboratories.

Ms. Kremitske will present a foundation session covering common laboratory inspection deficiencies. “We will explore the top deficiencies that accrediting organizations find and discuss evidence of compliance on a sampling from the top deficiency list,” she explains. “Knowing the common deficiencies is an important element to a quality program and will help to pinpoint areas that might need greater focus to sustain improvements.”

“Creating an environment that fosters a culture of inspection readiness by every member of the team is another important factor for laboratory leaders to keep in mind,” adds Ms. Kremitske. “As leaders, we are all committed to creating a positive culture in our individual laboratories. What tactics can we use to create an environment that moves staff away from a checklist mentality and hardwires meaning and attentiveness to standards on a continual basis?”

Dr. Rohde will present an advanced session titled, Innovative Ideas/Future Trends to Integrate the Laboratory and Population Health. “While the pandemic has helped with the visibility of our professions, we continue to strive for more awareness about our critical roles in society alongside health care,” he says. “Public health and medical laboratory professionals’ identity is rooted in patient care and saving lives.”

Other advanced sessions include Creating and Sustaining a Leading Laboratory, presented by Mr. Abumuhor and Dr. Brown; and Full Speed Ahead!  Developing a Strategic Plan and Aligning Your Team for Success, by Ms. Nickel.
