ASCP applauds U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy for issuing a Surgeon General’s Advisory highlighting the urgent need to address the health worker burnout crisis across the country. The May 23 report notes that health workers have faced systemic challenges in the health care system even before the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to crisis levels of burnout. A projected shortage of more than three million essential health workers is expected over the next five years and a projected shortage of nearly 140,000 physicians by 2033. ASCP appreciates the Surgeon General’s focus for raising the profile of this issue.
The
Surgeon General’s Advisory Addressing Health Worker Burnout lays out recommendations that can help address factors contributing to burnout, improve health worker well-being, and strengthen the nation’s public health infrastructure. ASCP has been and continues to advocate for more federal help to address this problem. For example, ASCP supports the
Healthcare Provider Protection Act, which provides for grants and requires other activities to address mental wellness among healthcare providers.
