Tennessee Rolls Back Laboratory Personnel Licensure

June 10, 2021

On May 25, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed into law legislation rolling back the state’s laboratory personnel licensure law. ASCP opposed the measure and worked diligently with other like-minded laboratory organizations concerned about quality standards for laboratory personnel. ASCP launched several grassroots campaigns against the bill and also wrote legislative leaders urging they oppose the measure. The bill was ultimately cleared for the Governor’s consideration when it was approved by the Tennessee House on May 4 by a vote of 74-19. The measure exempts so-called “private labs” (hospital and independent labs) from the need to hire licensed (and certified) laboratory personnel.
