ASCP Applauds CDC for Variant Identification Efforts

June 10, 2021

ASCP wrote the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to thank the agency for its leadership in identifying and tracking coronavirus variants. In its letter, ASCP called out the CDC’s Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) program for praise. ASCP noted that “vigilant monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 variants is important to an accurate understanding of the potential for reinfection by this virus as well as infection following vaccination (ie, real world vaccine efficacy). Data on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 variants is critical to understanding enhanced such issues as virus transmissibility, potentially enhanced virulence, resistance to monoclonal antibody and convalescent plasma therapies, and vaccine coverage.”
