ASCP Membership Equips You with the Knowledge and Resources to Succeed

When Maria Hintzke, MD, FASCP, first became involved with ASCP as a volunteer several years ago, the experience opened her eyes to the world of pathology beyond her own circle of colleagues. In fact, networking with ASCP volunteer leaders also helped her land her first job.

Today, Dr. Hintzke is Chair of ASCP’s Pathologist Council and strongly encourages other members to become active in the organization. “Reflecting on the times we are in, it is more important than ever to become active with ASCP. It provides not only a great education that the organization is known for but it also gives you an opportunity to connect with the pathology community at large in ways that are not really possible right now,” she said.

During these challenging times, gratitude and giving back are high on Dr. Hintzke’s list. She is appreciative for the high quality education that ASCP provides as well as the opportunity to develop her leadership skills.

“I think of ASCP as the premier source of educational materials for all members of the pathology community,” she said. “In addition, it has really helped me to build leadership. I tend to have a more timid personality and so becoming involved in the Resident Council, and now Pathologist Council, has helped me to be more confident in expressing my ideas.”

She credits mentors such as Melissa P. Upton, MD, FASCP, and Steven Kroft, MD, MASCP, both former ASCP presidents, and Alexandra Harrington, MD, FASCP, as individuals whose work she admires and values that she has sought to incorporate into her own pathology practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee.

Their inspiration has led her to immerse herself as an ASCP volunteer to develop and provide resources for other members. “It’s a way to give back and provide for other members of the pathology community,” she says.

Now’s the time to invest in yourself by renewing your ASCP membership today!
